NCGA Announces New, Limited Edition ‘International Year of Co-ops’ Chocolate Bars

Today, National Cooperative Grocers Association (NCGA) announced the launch of two new, limited edition ‘International Year of Co-ops’ chocolate bars. Made in partnership with Theo Chocolate, the bars are available exclusively through NCGA food co-ops across the country beginning in October. For every chocolate bar sold, NCGAwill donate $0.50 to support the two co-ops that supply cocoa for the products: Fortaleza del Valle cocoa cooperative in Ecuador and the CEPICAFE cocoa cooperative in Peru.

Cooperative businesses are part of a diverse and growing worldwide movement. In recognition of the tangible economic and social contributions made by cooperative businesses, the United Nations declared 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives. NCGA partnered with Theo Chocolate to help shoppers celebrate while enjoying their favorite sweet: chocolate.

“Food co-ops have long provided a direct link between shoppers and farmers,” said Robynn Shrader, chief executive officer for NCGA. “These limited edition chocolate bars provide direct support for cocoa farmers by ensuring living wages, promote the health of our planet through organic growing practices, and create artisan food manufacturing jobs in the U.S. This project is just another way that food co-ops and our shoppers and owners are helping to build a better world!”

The ‘International Year of Co-ops’ chocolate bars are organic and fair trade certified, and come in 85% dark and 45% milk chocolate varieties. Bars will be sold at a suggested retail price of $3.99 and are available while supplies last. NCGA aims to raise more than $40K for the cacao growers' co-ops in Ecuador and Peru by year-end.
