The cooperative model offers a powerful alternative to business as usual and has the potential to form a strong foundation for meaningful community economic development. Our vision is to see more food co-ops serving more people in more communities. To help accomplish this vision, NCGA created a subsidiary Development Cooperative (DC) in 2008 to provide specific, fee-based business development services for retail food co-ops in the areas of:
- Business improvement - Areas of assistance include improving sales; gross margin and productivity; inventory management; marketing; staff development; and new department deployment.
- Expansion and new store development - Areas of assistance cover market analysis review; site selection; project scale; finance procurement; lease negotiation; store design; architect and contractor oversight; build-out management; equipment sourcing and installation; staffing and opening; marketing; and post-opening monitoring and measurement.
The Development Co-op serves food co-ops by offering the expertise of our staff and affiliate co-ops and by developing practices that institutionalize such knowledge. This approach allows us to provide direct development services for individual co-ops while also building system-wide tools that help build the entire sector. The DC's patient capital model provides for extended payments following completion of the project.
The DC primarily works with co-ops affiliated with (members or associate co-ops of) NCGA. If you would like more information on the Development Co-op, please contact us.
